Yaadcore

As the founder of the global party Dubwise Jamaica, creator of the popular Reggae Aroma mixtape series and the first person to play leading lights Chronixx and Kabaka Pyramid over the Jamaican airwaves, Yaadcore is one of the most prominent and influential DJs working in reggae today. Having already cemented his place as a pivotal tastemaker, Yaadcore is now making his mark as a producer and vocalist with his first original recordings.
Raised in Mandeville, Jamaica, Yaadcore learned the art of “playing sound” from his father, a selector with local reggae sound system, Love People International. First gravitating to dancehall, he became disillusioned with that genre’s explicit content. He soon found his calling within the seeds of what would come to be known as the reggae revival — a close-knit group of young singers, deejays and musicians who were blending the upful, cultural vibes of classic roots reggae with a modern approach to music-making and branding.
In 2013, Yaadcore joined with one of these artists, the enterprising Protoje, to create the earliest incarnation of Dubwise at the Kingston venue, Redbones. He also became tour DJ for Protoje, providing an opportunity to share this vibration in countries around the world. Dubwise itself went international in 2015, expanding to Miami for a weekly series and “popping up” in over a dozen countries including Malta, Ethiopia, Kenya and Trinidad — making it the first truly global reggae party. In 2016, he became the first and, to this date only, reggae DJ to spin live at the annual Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn.
On the studio front, Yaadcore has become celebrated for his Reggae Aroma mix series: The selector releases a new installment through his Soundcloud annually. This year also sees the start of a new mixtape and event series entitled Riddim Salut which finds the selector paying tribute to the classic reggae riddims of yesteryear.
In 2018, Yaadcore released his first original production, “No Fenke Fenke” featuring Kabaka Pyramid and Shanique Marie, which harkens back to the classic rub-a-dub recordings of early ‘80s Jamaica. The track is the first of many to come through a joint venture between Delicious Vinyl Island, the new Caribbean music label from L.A.’s legendary Delicious Vinyl, and his own 12 Yaad label. 2019 sees the release of his first appearance as a vocalist, “Ready Now.” His song “Fast Lane” featuring Jesse Royal can currently be heard in the Jamaican film Sprinter. An EP, 20/20, is set to arrive in 2020.
Having already cemented his place as the preeminent tastemaker and curator for a new generation of reggae music, Yaadcore is set to become a major voice in the genre.
